{bringing in the details...}

I'm going to share with you a few accents and details that I like to bring into a home when I get to do all the decorating...

The main foyer features a chocolate accent wall for some very important photos.

  I love iron nail buttons and lots of jute twine wrapped around it and then taped behind the photo frames to make it look like they are actually hanging from the jute.

We also embellished the little black lamp shades with cute trim from the craft store and hot glue.

To the left are some old garden gates screwed right into the wall.  These were a vintage find from a salvage yard in Vermont.

On the front foyer door I, of course, dangle a twiggy natural wreath from a thumb tack and ribbon.

The "family est." words were printed with my Cricut.

Another easy trick is to add some simple molding around entry doors.  This is a two story foyer so it could use some added height. I put a 1x4 of pine and then a decorative trim cut at a 15 degree angle.
Don't forget the caulk.

As you walk down the center hall you come into a great room.
The kitchen, breakfast area and a family room.

The GROCERIES sign is a rustic addition to compliment the modern style mirror.
(mixing styles gives a more "collected over time" look - not a "walk in the furniture store and purchase a whole room" look)

This black french door leads to the finished basement.
Removing the six panel white door and bringing in an accent door gives this space a whole lot of character.
Plus - now you can see the living area below making the home feel even larger than before.

The cabinets are all natural maple but we enhanced the island to look like old world furniture.

Since this floor plan is very open, the decor needed to flow from room to room.

The board and batten trim above the fireplace mantel is consistent with the dining room wainscoting and also the way I trimmed out the island in the kitchen.

Carrying the mantel color to the ceiling makes the fireplace a bigger and
 more beautiful focal point.

Now the mantel displays stand out more.

This lovely photograph is framed in one of my handcrafted chunky frames.

I hang the curtain rods as high as possible to accentuate ceiling height.

These neutral panels were from Target but to make them look more custom we used Stitch Witchery to iron on some ribbon (no sew is the way to go).  The chocolate color ties in with the chocolate accent wall and dark walnut wood stain used on several furniture and art pieces.  Kris already had these wooden rods so we just spray painted them a flat black to look like iron. The iron scroll accent above the molding is another detail that replays a little in each room. 

Creamy knit slip covered chairs sit in the corners of this family room.  This wall to the right needed some sort of art. While keeping the mantel the main focal point, we chose some large scale but simple black and white pattern pieces that don't demand too much attention but tie in with the other decor.

On the opposite wall behind the other slip covered chair I made some custom art pieces that are simple and unique.



I worked with the textures and color to get it just right and the square wall art duo is perfect in this corner. They also go with all the other decor and don't demand too much attention yet fill the space perfectly.

It's nice to bring in unique, handmade details that not everybody in the neighborhood can just go out and buy.

Like this coffee table that I also made for this cute family.

This house has a darling side entrance from the driveway.  I made sort of a "mudroom" with easy storage for little mittens and jackets.  The shelf is just 2-1x6 boards on top of pine brackets purchased at the lumber store. The iron hooks were purchased at a home center.

We found this bench at an unfinished wood furniture store and I used the same stain and finish here as I did on the coffee table and the shelf above.

Keeping a consistent color scheme and similar decor through this home makes it feel warm and comfortable with easy flow.  There are enough little details in each room that give it a signature style all it's own.

I hope some of these little accents and tips help inspire you in your own decorating adventures.
